"Sundried" is a title that refers both to the adobe structure and to the strings of red chile ristras drying the strong New Mexico sun.
This original watercolor is based on a small adobe shack behind the Sagebrush Inn in Taos, New Mexico. When I stayed at the Inn in 2021, I took several pictures of this humble shed, and I finally got around to painting my interpretation of it this year.
INSIDER INSIGHTS: This sunny watercolor is painted with a limited palette composed of the three tertiary colors red-orange, yellow-green, and blue-purple. As I experimented with the Joyce Hicks Signature Da Vinci Palette, I used almost exclusively Vermillion, Mother Green, and Mother Violet. Alizarin Crimson allowed for a brighter red for the ristras, and then I used that same rich red elsewhere in the composition to help keep the unified feeling of the painting.
This painting is currently marked "ON HOLD" because I will be attending the Taos Watercolor Workshop again this year, and I want to take the original with me. However, if you are interested in this painting, we can make prints for you. Please contact the artist if you have any questions or wish for further information. [email protected].
