One evening as I was driving home, I looked west and saw this striking sunset! I couldn't stop to take a picture, so I tried to memorize the scene. The clouds were dramatically dark and the sky a luminous yellow. As soon as I got home I went to my studio and painted this watercolor, trying to catch my impression of this striking contrast of dark and light.
It occurred to me that this was in some ways a picture of the stormy times we have been experiencing. For many people, our perspective on life has been clouded by COVID. For some people these clouds brought unfathomable hardship, and for some even death. And yet at the same time there was beauty and light surrounding us, too. In some cases people found light shining through the clouds, penetrating the darkness and discovering new opportunities. Some people even passed through the darkness and discovered the ultimate light of heaven.
